Via The Spun, a report on F1 star Lewis Hamilton’s outspoken thoughts about Florida’s anti-LGBTQ measures:

In the lead up to Sunday’s F1 Grand Prix of Miami, seven-time Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton spoke out against anti-LGBTQ measures implemented by the state of Florida.

Hamilton, 38, is frequently outspoken about issues pertaining to race and social justice. The only Black driver in Formula One, he has raced with a rainbow flag on his helmet in the past and intends to do so again this weekend.

Hamilton offered his support for the LGBTQ community and condemned Florida’s Parental Rights in Education bill aka the “Don’t Say Gay” law.

“It’s not good at all,” Hamilton said Thursday, via the Associated Press. “I stand by those within the community here. I hope they continue to stand firm and push back. I’ll have the rainbow on my helmet. It’s no different to when we were in Saudi.”

While Hamilton vehemently disagrees with the new law, signed into effect by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in March, he did not weigh in on if F1 should consider removing itself from Florida due to its policies.

“It’s not for me to decide something like that,” Hamilton said. “I did hear and have read about some of the decisions that have been made in government here and I do not agree with it and I do not support it. I really do continue to stand with the LGBTQ community and I’m wearing a rainbow flag on my helmet this weekend and I just really want to continue to support the community here and let them know I stand with them and I hope they continue to fight against it.”

Hamilton is looking for his first win of the 2023 F1 season. He finished sixth at the inaugural Grand Prix of Miami last year.

The 2023 Grand Prix of Miami will get underway at 3:30 p.m. ET Sunday on ESPN.
