China Clipper: Remembering Larry Kwong’s Barrier-Breaking Impact On The NHL
By admin
75 years ago this week, Larry Kwong broke the NHL color barrier, becoming the first person of Asian descent to play in the NHL with the New York Rangers. On March 13th, 1948, Kwong suited up with the Rangers to play against the Montreal Canadiens. Although Kwong remained on the bench for two periods of the game, he got his chance in the third for a single shift. A shift that made history, officially breaking the NHL color barrier. Despite only suiting up for one NHL game, Larry Kwong’s determination and perseverance paved the way for those behind him. He was an inspiration to more than a dozen players of Asian ancestry who followed him to the NHL.
